For Dimensio, supplier of every kind of bag imaginable, recycling of raw materials is a matter of course. Because, they say at Dimensio, there are few materials as reusable as plastic. Kitty van Dijk, HR Director - and also responsible for operational matters - says: "Plastic wrongly has a bad reputation. If someone dumps their waste on the street, you shouldn't blame the product, but the person doing it."
Dimensio Verpakkingen B.V. started in 1992 as a bag specialist and, more than 30 years later, has grown into a total packaging supplier. Over the years, several companies have joined Dimensio and together they form a strong entity for sustainable growth within the packaging sector.
Under the umbrella of Dimensio Packaging are several companies within the packaging sector, including, of course, Dimensio 'the bag specialist'. Van Dijk: "We are specialists in all types of rubbish bags, for every sector and every application. From clothing collection bags for the Salvation Army to dog poo bags. And from bags they put around your windscreen wiper in the car wash to plastic packaging for bread, meat and chocolate."
More than just environmental gains
In producing all these types of bags, Dimensio is committed to using recycled materials as much as possible. "Circular entrepreneurship is simply the most logical choice," says Van Dijk. "Not only does it provide a lot of environmental benefits, but it is also financially interesting. And it makes no difference to waste you put in whether you take a bag made of new material or recycled plastic. Why always use new raw materials to make a product? We don't see the point of that." Incidentally, reuse is not possible in all cases, she adds in fairness. "The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority, for example, prescribes that packaging for meat, fish and poultry must be made of new material."
But where reuse is possible, Dimensio applies it. In 2021, Dimensio moved to a brand new building and warehouse at business park Stichtsekant in Almere Haven. Sustainability was also taken into account as much as possible in the design of this new building. "We collect rainwater and use it for flushing water in toilets and as extinguishing water for the sprinkler system. We have a green sedum roof and as many as 3,000 solar panels. We also heat and cool using heat pumps, and are completely gas-free. Another nice thing to mention is that we also have a bee garden and that we use sheep instead of mowing our grass with motor mowers." Relatively, she adds: "Of course, we realise that all our efforts do not always have an immediate impact. But every little bit helps. As a company, we set an example and we hope to inspire other entrepreneurs with this."
