The transition to a circular future starts with innovative ideas and bold steps. Stone Box, founded by Marc Heddes and Allard Lith, is committed to tackling disposable packaging pollution with sustainable, circular solutions. During the Startup Hero Journey 2024, they managed to refine their strategy and convince companies of the power of their innovative packaging concepts.
Building a circular future
Single-use packaging, or disposable packaging, is among the biggest environmental problems of our time, think home-delivered meals or online purchases. Stone Box offers a solution that is both sustainable and fully circular. Their packaging is made from stone powder, making it tree-free. This innovative production process uses no water or chemicals, requires little energy and produces a strong, waterproof and reusable packaging material.
Allard Lith explains, "We want to show that things can be done differently. Our packaging not only reduces the impact of disposable products, but also offers companies the chance to make a real difference."
With ambitious plans, such as building its own factory in the Netherlands, Stone Box aims to produce sustainable packaging locally. This will enable them to accelerate the transition to recycling and significantly reduce the carbon footprint of packaging.
Working together for impact
The transition to a circular packaging industry goes beyond technology; it is about collaboration and conviction. The Startup Hero Journey allowed Marc and Allard to hone their story and build strong networks. This has led to promising pilots, including a project with an asparagus grower from Limburg.
This entrepreneur uses Stone Box's water-resistant packaging to better protect his asparagus during transport. With previous packaging, it was not possible to water the asparagus, so some arrived damaged. The result? Less food waste, lower packaging costs and satisfied customers. This is just one of many examples of how circular innovations can be both sustainable and economically beneficial.
The promise of circular packaging
Stone Box looks to the future with ambition. "As a team, we believe that after further scaling up, our circular solution will not only become affordable, but can also have a lasting positive impact on society," Allard reveals. The Almere startup's mission is perfectly in line with global sustainability goals: less waste, less pollution and a circular economy where reuse is central.
The Startup Hero Journey as a springboard
During the Startup Hero Journey, Stone Box took important steps in sharpening their strategy and market position. The program offered them a multiplying insight into their business model, mentoring, valuable connections and the chance to further develop their vision. As Allard puts it, "We are determined to make a substantial contribution to the circular economy with our sustainable solution and vision."
