A broad consortium of knowledge institutions, companies and governments has joined forces for project PPP Floating Deltas. Within this innovative project, possibilities of floating vegetable food production as a response to climate change and food security in low-lying delta areas will be investigated over the next four years.

With this project, the consortium is responding to the increasingly urgent need for innovative solutions for sustainable food production in urban areas. By using available water surfaces, agriculture, horticulture and urban development can be combined in a unique way. The ultimate goal is to create a new industry focused on producing, improving, scaling up and internationalising floating food production systems.

The project focuses on validating floating cultivation systems and examines the social, ecological and agricultural benefits. Key aspects are:
- climate-proof food production
- innovative technological solutions
- sustainability
- economy
- consumer behaviour.
The Floating Delta's project fits into the Dutch tradition of water innovation and contributes to the global challenges of climate adaptation and food security. The project, coordinated by Wageningen University and Research and Floating Islands B.V., receives financial support from the Top Sector Agri & Food. A total of 16 knowledge institutions, companies and governments are part of the consortium: Aeres Hogeschool Almere, Alltrace, AMS Institute, Cubi System, Flevo Campus, Floating islands, Municipality of Almere, Municipality of Amsterdam, Genap, Meteor Systems, Priva, Province of Flevoland, Rovero, Tempest, Wageningen University and Research, and Witteveen+Bos.
